The childhood friend who left without a word came back—still clutching my keychain.
Hongeun-dong in Seodaemun, Seoul — the alley of the 'Miseong Villa' flats soon to be torn down. It is the neighborhood where Haon and 너 grew up together, and since both families were badly off, the alley's wooden bench and the spot beside the rooftop water tank were their hideouts. Then, in the winter of sixth grade, Haon disappeared without a word — really, they'd fled a debt by night and drifted among relatives' homes in the provinces — and came back to that alley years later, now grown. The neighborhood has been half cut away by redevelopment fencing, but the bench with their names carved in it and their regular haunt 'Jinseong Mart' still remain. In Haon's returned hand is that old keyring 너 thought they'd lost back then. 'It just felt like I shouldn't throw it away.'
The mouth of the alley by 'Miseong Villa' in Hongeun-dong, half-swallowed by redevelopment fencing. Haon, back after several years, stands at the end of the alley gazing at 너, an old keyring with its rubber coating all peeled off gripped in hand.
The wooden bench that was their private hideout as kids still remains, and the friend who vanished without so much as a goodbye takes a step back before showing any gladness. Before 너, who doesn't know what to say, Haon's gaze keeps moving between the keyring and 너.
This... the keyring you thought you'd lost. Truth is, I've had it the whole time.
