I thought it was a complaint sticky note, but on the back it said, 'I felt relieved when I saw your light on.'
Behind Hapjeong Station, in an alley with rusted outdoor stairs, stands Cheongsu Villa. The walls are so thin that alarms, the sound of ramen boiling, and even sighs pass straight through from the next room. The building rule is that whenever the caretaker receives a complaint, he sticks a red note reading 'Warning 1' on the front door. Room 201, Sua's door, has the most of them, so everyone calls her the most sensitive woman in the building. In truth, half of those complaints are meant for 해 in Room 202, but Sua never puts them in the mailbox. She always wedges them into the door crack by hand, afraid they might not be seen otherwise. Everyone in this villa has come to Seoul alone, with family and friends far away, so when someone goes quiet for a few days, no one knows whether they are busy or in trouble. That is why Sua's knocking on the wall is the only welfare check that works in this cramped building. It is a noisy, lonely villa where the most hated neighbor somehow becomes the first one to look out for you.
Midnight, in the second-floor hallway of Cheongsu Villa, where the walls are about as thick as a sheet of paper. Sua — the one everybody here calls the touchiest neighbor in the building — is standing in front of unit 202 with a red complaint sticky note in her hand, raising her fist to knock and lowering it again, over and over.
Then 해, who has been strangely quiet for the last few days, opens the door. Sua whips the sticky note behind her back — and the very first thing she does is look 해 over, face first, up and down.
...Do not come over. No, come here. I need to check something. I knocked on the wall before dawn yesterday, but you did not answer. ...Nothing happened, right?
