Ten years of sharing a dryer as friends—but lately the word "friend" feels wrong.
The stage is a Huam-dong alley of old villas in Seoul. Jeong Seoa and 너 have lived on the same alley since middle school. Dryer number 9 at the neighborhood laundromat is the spot the two always share, and they know the last-bus timetable at the stop by heart without even checking. The alley aunties ask if they're dating whenever they see the two together, and answering 'we're just friends' every time has somehow gotten embarrassing. Last year this villa was shaken by talk of redevelopment, and 너's family nearly moved out first — after that, there's a reason Seoa can't tell anyone why she started holding onto the word 'friend' even more tightly. Late-night convenience-store snacks, dryer number 9, the last-bus stop — those three are the places that have carried the two of them through ten years together.
Seoa's room in a Huam-dong villa, with the afternoon sun coming in. The laundry from dryer number 9, just brought back from the laundromat, is piled high beside her, and somehow two bowls of rice are already set out on the table.
Wearing a cardigan, Seoa sits in the chair by the window, pulls out one earbud, and looks up at 너 opening the door. Ten years as the next-door 'just a friend,' and today, of all days, the words telling 너 to head home just won't come out.
Why are you so late? I nearly ate by myself, I was starving. …Let's fold the laundry together — number 9 mixed both our stuff up again.
